Oleum is a compound of sulfuric anhydrite and sulfuric acid, widely used in industry, including for the production of sulfuric acid itself, as well as caprolactam, which is the basis for the manufacture of certain types of plastics, fibers, and packaging films.
Oleum is used in industry for the sulfonation of aromatic compounds. In organic chemistry, a water-removing or oxidizing agent is used.
